EarthStone joined the CELT team @ Weekend In The Hills, May 10th & 11th
Our first of three workshops in 2025 as the tutor for Introduction to Dry Stone Technique Workshops at the amazing Weekend In The Hills Craft workshops located in the wonderful Slieve Aughty Centre, Kylebrack, County Galway
A freestanding single wall
A workshop to repair a section of single wall
A section of freestanding single wall was in need of extending on the farm at Sileve Aughty. The stone here is a mix of Old Red Sandstone and Quartzite. Some very big boulders in this single wall. Fun awaited us!
Gathering Stones
First up all the stone needed to be gathered from around the field. Biggest ones in first and closest to the wall. The tractor and transport box is your only man
Alpacas & Sheep
With alpacas and sheep for company the day was sure to be nice and chill
One stone wide and each one touching two
Single walls are immediate and minimalist. It's all about points of contact and creating mountain peaks and wide valleys
Smaller and smaller stones as you go up
A single wall like this has a natural batter and gets narrower as it rises. Placing the stones with the long side mostly across the wall makes for a strong one
Sunday's are fun days
With just the three of us on Sunday we finished out the wall. We were pleased with ourselves
